Category: Let's talk
so, it's nearly valentines day peeps, and soon cards, teddy bears and over priced bouquets of flowers will be making their way across the world to those people who are expecting them from the ones they love. but is it all overrated? Why is it, that a certain day of the year predicts that we have to shell out loads of cash and be all loved up, and go out for that special meal ... why does a day of the year say we have to do that, why not just do it spontaniously. ... any views?
I think the whole valentines thing is a load of commericalised crap..quite why people bother is beyond me where's the sense in coming over all lovey dovey for 1 day per year,it makes you wonder what were these eejits doing for the rest of the time..no we show our love frequently and openly, only this morning, I was nearly eaten alive in the supermarket... grin
i don't need an excuse to show I care about anyone, but dont' mind one anyway. however, i'm the minority, so i think it should be abolished, smile.
Eaten alive Goblin eh? Was this by your guide dragon by any chance hmmmm....Frey. PS yes please anyone as many Valentine's cards as you like on my door mat Feb. 14th thank you.
Wat a bunch of miserable old so-and-sos we are today eh? Dear me! Course we can be nice to each other and all romantic etc. on any other day of the year, but Valentine's day is still exciting surely. Besides, you can get some cracking deals at places like Claridges for Valentine's day. And by the way, commercial doesn't equal bad does it?
Oh come on pal the pathetically sugary sweet cards, massively overpriced red roses that last a week at best, and the seriously expensive meals suddenly sprouting up where there were none before...its exploitation of the guilty and gullible and while I'm at it why is valentines day solely for women! What about us guys, who endure the pms and bad mood swings, murderous thoughts and so on what about us!.
It's PMT here in britain old lad, only Americans get PMS, sorry call it PMS! Well i think it's harmless fun to be honest. Furthermore, just because we have a Valentine's day, it doesn't automatically mean that you can't be romantic at other times. exploitation? What about all the mystery surrounding those poems you receive from an anonymous secret admirer? you can't tell me that you didn't like that part of it when you were unattached at least.
I think days like Valentine's day (or even Christmas for that matter) and the idea of those days beooming the time for showing apprecation for one's loved ones is a nobel and a very romantic idea. I think, however, the comercial opportunities these days provided has done a good job to ruin the significance of those days by creating a very tangible social expectation and instead of people being happy to be appreciated on this day they now expect this and in fact turn very disappointed if this is not the case. I think the comercialization of such holidays is always going to be a double edged sword. On one hand, obviously, you get good deals and interesting merchandize (also note that most of these special days come during the winter months, which I think is no coincidence since their initial purpose doubtlessly was to create something to look forward to and help pass those long winter months), on the other hand the expectations created by comercials extensive media coverage/propaganda etc has created a bit of a duty to spend so much money on presents and to give certain things or a certain value. I think that goes against the spirit of the days and the reason we have those days in the first place, giving has to be your joy, not a type of chore.
So, really to sum up, I think these are great days and one should have one day where one appreciate the important people in one's life but I think that day should be something each individual chooses, not predetermined by society. :)
Cheers

Nah you got it wrong again Gobby, it's not the guys who endure the PMT, it's the girls, and yes we do deserve plenty of spoiling...
